Oh Rocket… Please Save Nigerian Internet From Itself

Dear Rocket Internet,
I have followed your interest in Africa (especially my home country Nigeria) initially with some amusement, which rapidly evolved, into concern and trepidation, now with resignation. You have come to stay and we must deal with you even if we do not like to do so.

I read the article on your recent foray into the online business in Nigeria and a certain quote by your founder caught my attention, “I don’t build boats, I build aircraft carriers,”

We, in Africa and especially Nigeria, are no strangers to boats from Europe and as a Benin Man who remembers the British punitive expedition that led to the great Benin Massacre in 1897, we also know the difference between merchant ships, slave ships and war boats. We do not understand why you would want to be at war with us as we are not the enemy. We expected you to come like the missionaries with the guise of evangelize before springing the surprise of colonization and amalgamation upon us. We shall pretend we did not hear that quote and will pretend that you are here bringing good tidings like missionaries or ready to trade like the merchants.

 

Just as the missionaries built hospitals and churches, merchants built roads and infrastructure that probably are still the only civil infrastructure present in many parts of Africa today, we invite you to also help us build our Internet infrastructure. The colonial-era infrastructure not only helped trade and evangelize, it became the foundation for modern infrastructure we all benefit from till today.
In Nigeria we claim to have 40 million people on the Internet but figures from Facebook and other sources make that doubtful. What is however not in question is the need for better Internet.

Mainone Cable and others have accomplished the difficult task of bringing submarine cables and wholesale Internet (to the same shores where you have landed) but the last-mile seems to be a very difficult hurdle to cross.

Current Nigerian ISPs are fat and lazy, they have not innovated since the ISP revolution was launched by Infoweb and Linkserve almost two decades ago. They deserve to be disrupted. The existing telcos are also not your foes, they are your friends as they will only benefit from more data usage all round. Whatsapp bundles alone will not save them.
Once again, we are all part of an ecosystem that needs to evolve and we are not enemies. We implore you to beat your swords into plough shares to till the land and yield a bountiful harvest or in your case convert your “aircraft carriers” to fishing trawlers. There is enough for all of us if we can see beyond the myopia of tech blogs.

SEO Keywords Research: How To Get The Right Keywords

How do you go about doing your seo keyword research? Do you have your own system or set of steps that you follow? Let me share with you my own tried and tested keyword research and may it help you with optimizing your own website.

One of the initial steps that I do, and I also suggest that you follow, is to completely evaluate is with what topic does my website deal with. While you might say that this is quite an easy thing to do, in reality it is not.

A lot of people do not start their research with this step because one, they believe they already know their website or online business inside and out, or two, because their site deals with a wide range of topics that you can’t nail it down to a single one.

If you ask me, the last one is the worst of all because it is harder to rank a website if it deals with a cornucopia of categories or topics. Sure it is possible to rank them at least through the individual pages, but this will be hard work and will consume much of your time. Compare that with focusing on just one theme or topic for all your seo efforts.

The next thing that I do is to use a keyword research tool, which in my case I usually make use of the free keyword tool from Google. You can use other tools, even the proprietary ones. It is all up to your preference and in my opinion, there is no single authority tool when it comes to keyword research.

If you are just starting out and your budget is limited, using the free tools is more than decent enough to help you with your research. I often begin my research by using broad terms and based from the results that the tool gives me, I would select the long tail keywords. That is because it is easier to rank for these keywords as the broad terms are often too competitive to get into.

I’m not sure about you but I only look at the monthly search volume in selecting my keywords. I select those with a good amount of searches, let’s say just a few thousands, and see if there are a lot of competitions for that keyword. If the search results gave just a few sites, then I save that keyword, marking it as a potential keyword.

Now if I am doing my search engine optimizing for just one website, I make sure that there is only one theme or topic for it. I also apply that thought to my keyword research as it will be the main factor in my site’s optimization. With just one theme, your seo campaign will be laser-focused and it will be easier for Google and the other search engines to rank your website properly.

How many keywords can be considered enough? It depends on the number of web pages contained in your website. I often use just one or two keywords per page and that all of these keywords are related to just one topic or theme to maintain the consistency.

These are just some of the tips that you can follow for your keyword research for seo. It is a safe and effective process that can help you quickly collect the right keywords for your website. Just always remember to work within just one theme and your seo campaign will be all sound and good.

9 Best Ways To Make Fast Money Online

There are a huge number of ways to make fast money online when you get into the details – as many different ways as there are people doing it. The trick is to pick one that you think you can handle, and get it making money for you before you try to add more.

Most people make the mistake of flitting from one to another or starting too many at once.So here’s my top 9, with the easiest IMO first.

The first four do not require a website and will bring you money faster than the others, but they will not go on earning for you after you stop working (except perhaps #3).

The quickest is #3 which can have money in your PayPal account within minutes. You should start getting paid for all of the rest except #5 – #7 within a week. With #5 – #7 you should be earning very quickly but will have to wait longer for payment to arrive.

So here are the methods:

#1 – Scour the house for stuff you don’t need and sell it on eBay
A great way to start with online money making, if only because it will force you to open a PayPal account. It’s kind of cheating though because it’s not really profit, and most people already did it. So if you already did it, move on to #2. If not:

Tip 1: find out how much packaging and shipping will cost before you list an item.
Tip 2: start your eBay auctions at the lowest possible price – more bidders will get involved earlier and the result is more money for you.
Tip 3: having auctions end around 12 noon Monday through Thursday works best for me.

#2 – Write articles for Associated Content
You must be over 18 and a legal US resident. You get upfront payments for most articles plus a performance payment based on page views. Look at the ‘calls for content’ to see what they want, you are more likely to be paid upfront for those. Check out the FAQ on the site. Non-US residents only get the performance payment and it’s not much. Bum marketing (#4) will pay you better if you are not American.

#3 – Promote $7 Script Ebooks
Very simple. Requires a PayPal account but no website. Go to $7 Offers and look for something that you think will sell well. It should address an urgent need or desire that people are willing to spend money for (e.g. make money, cure annoying health problem, lose weight, etc.). It will be easier to promote if you know something about the subject.

Click on the ebook that you found to get its home page address. The site owner’s contact details should be at the foot of the page. Email them to ask for your affiliate link. Then promote in forums and free advertising sites.
You will get 100% of the sale price direct into your PayPal account. The site owner makes money from the upsell (selling the buyers other things afterward). See On Demand Profits for details of this method.

#4 – Sell your services on Elance or Rentacoder
Your services could be article writing, graphic design, website coding, or grunt work such as submitting sites to directories. Check out what people are looking to hire for, and put in your bids. If you live in a country with a high cost of living (North America, Europe, Australia etc) be prepared to face competition from people who can afford to work for much less.

 #5 – ‘Bum marketing’
Requires good English and a basic website or blog but no PayPal account. First, sign up as an affiliate with Clickbank and search their marketplace for an ebook with the same criteria as in #3.

Look for ebooks that are selling well on Clickbank with low refund rates and have well-written sales letters that make you want to buy. Write a review of it on your website or blog. Then write articles related to the subject and submit them to Ezinearticles.com and other article directories with a link in the resource box to your site. Marketing Method
Clickbank pay weekly by US$ check or bank transfer depending on your earnings and will pay to most countries. Check their site for terms and restrictions.

#6 – Build a list and sell recommended products
As for #5 but you have an opt-in form on your website so you get more chances to sell to your visitors. Requires an autoresponder e.g. AWeber.

Write a newsletter i.e. 6 – 10 emails with useful information that you feed into your autoresponder account. It’s best to promote at least 2 ebooks in your niche (not both in the same email) e.g. if your subject is dogs, then one on dog training and one on health for dogs.

To increase opt-ins you can also offer a short free report to entice people to sign up to the list. Put links to the ebooks in the free report too.

Next promote your one-page website. Use the same promotion tactics as in #3 and #5. Look for information online about other affiliate marketing promotion methods including Web 2.0.

 #7 – Buy a turnkey website with Adsense and affiliate feeds
A lot of people waste money buying sites that never see a single visitor but you can make money if you go about this right. The important things are (1) pick a good niche that addresses a specific urgent need or wish as in #3, (2) start with only one site and (3) understand that you must make the site unique and spend time promoting it.

It is best if the seller has done some keyword research and set it up with plenty of keyword-optimized articles plus good Adsense placement and affiliate products (e.g. Clickbank/Amazon/eBay feeds). You can also target your site to sell affiliate products from Commission Junction, Linkshare, etc. You will need to know basic html or be willing to learn but your English is not so important as for the other methods.

Look for turnkey sites for sale on Sitepoint, Digital Point or join something like Niches-In-A-Box. When you have your site, unless the content is unique, change the titles of all of the articles (without messing with the keyword), rewrite the first sentence and change a few words in the rest of each article. Then go ahead and promote using all the methods you can find on this blog and more. If you buy through Niches-In-A-Box they will teach you a lot of promotion methods. Use them all. Then add more pages to the site.

#8 – Sell your own ebooks
You don’t have to write these from scratch, you can either buy PLR ebooks and rewrite them (see Cash Avalanche for details of this method) or outsource. You can also sell resale rights products. Again pick a good subject and then look for/write the ebook, not vice versa. You will need a website to sell from.  

Promote.
You will make more money if you can get affiliates selling for you by putting your product into Clickbank, Pay Dot Com or $7 Offers (you need the $7 Script for the last one and also, of course, an upsell, because affiliates get 100% of the upfront sale). Approach people who have websites in your niche and ask them to promote it (these are called JV partners – like affiliates, but it sounds better).

#9 – Sell turnkey websites
Easier than you think because you don’t have to design them. You can use templates and content from PLR sites like Easy Market Profits – check the terms, some sites will not let you resell, you should email the site owner to ask. Again choose good niches. Buy a relevant domain, set the site up on reseller hosting and offer it for sale on Sitepoint or Digital Point with an option of continuing hosting with you at $5 a month per site by PayPal subscription.

You can charge more if you make all of the articles unique before selling. People will check so the articles need to be completely rewritten – you are not just doing it for Google this time. You can also, of course, charge a lot more if you promote the site and have it earning good revenue – but then you might not want to sell it!

There are some even better ways which can make you more money in the longer term but don’t fit the heading of ways to make fast money online. These include network marketing (MLM) as a form of affiliate marketing and building your own sites for Adsense and affiliate commissions instead of buying turnkey sites.

The novel opens in an exciting vein. Pip is a young orphan who lives with his sister and her husband (Joe). When he is still a young boy, news arrives that a man has escaped from the local prison. Upon threat of his life, Pip brings food and tools to Magwitch, until Magwitch is recaptured.

Pip continues to grow up, and one day is taken by an uncle to play at a rich woman’s house. This woman is the fabulous Miss Haversham who had been hurt terribly when she had been left at the altar and, though she is an old woman, still wears a tatty old wedding dress. Pip almost meets a young girl who, though she kisses him, treats him with contempt. Pip, despite the girl's cold treatment of him, falls in love with her and desperately wants to be a man of means so that he might be worthy to marry her.

Then, Jaggers (a lawyer) arrives to tell him that a mysterious benefactor has offered to pay for Pip to be made into a gentleman. Pip goes to London, and soon is considered a man of great possibilities (and is therefore embarrassed by his roots and his former relations).

A Young Gentleman: Great Expectations

Pip lives a young swell's life--enjoying his youth. He comes to believe that it was Miss Haversham who is providing him with the money--to prepare him for marrying Estella. But then, Magwitch barges into his room, revealing that he is mysterious benefactor (he escaped from prison and went to Australia, where he made a fortune).

Now, Magwitch is back in London, and Pip helps him to escape once again. In the meantime, Pip helps Miss Haversham comes to terms with the loss of her husband (she is caught up in a fire and eventually dies). Estella marries a country bumpkin with money (even though there is no love in the relationship, and he will treat her with cruelty).

Despite Pip's best efforts--Magwitch is once more caught; and Pip can no longer live as a young gentleman. He and his friend leave the country and make their money by hard work. In the final chapter (one that Dickens rewrote), Pip returns to England and meets Estella in a graveyard. Her husband had died, and the book hints at a happy future for the two of them.

 

Class, Money & Corruption: Great Expectations

Great Expectations depicts the differences between the classes, and how money can corrupt. The novel makes clear that money cannot buy love, nor does it guarantee happiness. One of the happiest--and most morally correct--people in the novel is Joe, Pip's sister's husband. And, Miss Haversham is one of the richest (as well as the most unhappy and loneliest).

Pip believes that if he can be a gentleman, he will have everything he wants from the world. His world collapses and he realizes that all his money has been based on Magwitch's dishonest earnings. And, Pip finally understands the true value of life.

Great Expectations features some of Dickens's greatest characters and one of his trademark convoluted plots. The novel is a fantastic read, and a wonderful morality tale. Full of romance, courageousness and hope--Great Expectations is a brilliant evocation of a time and place. Here's a view of the English class system that is both critical and realistic.
